Muriel Mesh Shawl - Free Beginner Friendly Crochet Pattern
Are you ready to elevate your crochet skills with an easy and fresh project? Whether you're a seasoned crocheter or just starting out, the Muriel Mesh Shawl is lightweight, airy, and the perfect project to kickstart your Spring crochet collection.
Made with Lion Brand’s Mandala Ombre yarn, the Muriel Mesh Shawl features an explosion of color you won’t want to put your hook down for. It's worked up in the Wonder colorway, which blends a few of my favorite hues. Take a look at the color palette here and see if one catches your eye and matches your style!
This oversized, bonfire-worthy shawl is sure to turn heads (just watch out for those fringes!). You’ll need 3 cakes of yarn to complete the full shawl, but if you skip the fringe, just under 3 cakes will do. While gauge isn’t crucial for this design, you’ll end up with a beautiful shawl that reaches a whopping 37”/92.5cm in depth—almost as tall as I am!
Styling this shawl is a breeze. Just throw it over your favorite dress or pair it with a simple t-shirt and jeans, and you’re good to go! This lightweight, airy design is perfect for Spring, when temperatures rise during the day and dip at night. Ready to add some flair and creativity to your crochet collection? Ch 1 and continue working on the diagonal edge from the top to the tip of the shawl. Continue in pattern from tip of the shawl to the top of the shawl.
Fasten off.
Fringe
Cut approx. 260 strands of yarn, each about 15” / 37.5 cm long (depending on how long you want your fringe to be).
Separate the strips and create groups of each solid color.
With smaller hook, work along each diagonal edge and add fringe in color sequence of choice.
Insert crochet hook into the edge of the shawl in the first sl st.
Fold one strand of yarn in half so you have a loop at the top.
Take your hook and draw the loop through the sl st that you’re attaching the fringe to.
Draw the loose ends of the yarn through the loop.
Continue attaching the strips of yarn to the edge of your shawl in each sl st or by evenly spacing them out as desired.
Using yarn needle, weave in any loose ends. Block your shawl and use scissors to trim the bottom of the fringe to your desired length, ensuring that all strands are even.
